Lead Web Engineer

Genki means "healthy, energetic, and full of spirit". We're a fully remote, profitable startup of about 25 people, five years in and growing steadily. We build tailored health insurance for long-term travelers like digital nomads, serving over 75,000 people in 200 countries. Our vision is to help them stay healthy wherever they go, far beyond insurance.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction of all internal and public web projects: unify what has grown organically and build the foundation for future work.
• Start as the sole web engineer and grow the web team over time; work alongside two existing non-web developers, report to the CEO, and collaborate closely with the designer.
• Design and implement cross-project infrastructure: shared component libraries, monorepo structure, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation.
• Build a setup and guardrails that enable non-engineers from all departments to contribute safely (standardized review, security, and deployment).
• Balance careful engineering with fast shipping; prioritize security, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
• Use AI-agentic development tools to improve productivity and quality, and define how to steer them effectively in the team workflow.
• Establish and maintain testing strategies, developer tooling, and team-level CI/CD practices.

Qualifications

• Proven experience building and shipping production web applications end-to-end, from static sites to complex SPAs.
• Experience making major architectural decisions and iterating based on real production feedback.
• Hands-on experience with cross-project infrastructure: shared component libraries, CI/CD pipelines, monorepo setups, and deployment automation.
• Strong understanding of web security, performance optimization, and browser capabilities.
• Attention to detail from pixel-perfect implementation to clean, consistent code.
• Daily use of AI-agentic development tools (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) and the ability to steer and evaluate their output.
• Experience setting up and maintaining CI/CD, testing strategies, and developer tooling for teams rather than just individual projects.
• Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and working async-first in a fully remote team.
