Supplier Industrialization Engineer, Battery Electrode

About the Role

Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for critical raw materials, component production and qualification activities at suppliers. This role is responsible for selecting, qualifying and scaling battery cell materials (focus on cell electrode) manufacturing processes and quality systems at Tesla supplier locations. You will work closely with many internal and external organizations to take new battery designs from initial concept through full production.

Responsibilities

• Review, set up, qualify and scale process flow for battery cell electrode manufacturing.
• Monitor production output at existing facilities and support expansion programs with existing suppliers.
• Set up in-process checks, OQC and corresponding IQC material quality controls, and qualify required metrology.
• Qualify capacity expansion for existing cell electrode products.
• Drive electrode-related failure analysis (FA) at supplier locations.
• Project-manage activities at supplier locations and ensure all milestones meet Tesla product qualification timelines.
• Act as a technical contact point for battery electrode manufacturing processes and coordinate activities across internal and external teams.

Qualifications

• MS/PhD in Chemical, Materials, Mechanical or related engineering discipline.
• 3+ years of experience in battery cell electrode manufacturing process & quality control, or 2+ years of battery supplier management.
• Working knowledge of high-volume battery cell manufacturing processes and quality control, especially electrode processes and their impact on cell performance.
• Hands-on experience developing OQC/IQC and metrology qualification for cell electrodes, including GRR and MSA.
• Well versed in statistical data analysis and process capability analysis (Cpk, Cp, Pp, Ppk).
• Experience characterizing electrode materials using techniques such as peeling strength, TGA, DSC, viscometer, moisture analysis, SEM, EDS.
• Good communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to travel ~75%.
