Engineering - Technology at Coda

Our engineering goal is to build robust, distributed systems capable of handling high-volume payments and e-commerce traffic spikes. We emphasise modern cloud infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code, and rapid delivery of microservices.

• Primary platform: AWS cloud
• Microservices via Quarkus, JSON and gRPC
• Multiple data storage integrations, queues, OpenTelemetry
• Focus on devops, automated testing, and scalable distributed architectures

About the Role

Coda is looking for an experienced Software Engineering Director to own and evolve a large, technically complex area of our eCommerce and payments ecosystem. The role requires strong communication, experience managing managers, and deep distributed systems architecture expertise.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of Coda systems and define an aggressive technology roadmap
• Lead, guide and mentor multiple software engineering teams and engineering managers
• Work closely with Product to align goals at OKR and day-to-day levels
• Drive engineering best practices across code, systems architecture, devops, automated testing, infra and data
• Own execution of product and technical goals across the payments group
• Coach team members using continuous improvement techniques to build a high-performance team
• Collaborate with recruiting to attract strong engineering talent

Qualifications

• Proven experience managing managers and leading multiple engineering teams
• Experience managing backend, frontend, and/or full-stack software engineering teams
• Strong hands-on architectural expertise and ability to set technical direction
• Passion for building great products and software
• Exemplary written and oral communication skills
• Experience building teams and optimising productivity in an agile environment
• 10+ years as a software engineer working on hard problems
• 5+ years in engineering management, architecture, or other leadership roles
• Strong experience with a range of data technologies (RDBMS, NoSQL, message queues, etc.)
• Ability to query, analyze, and work with data to drive decision-making
• Expert-level architectural skills in building scalable, fault-tolerant distributed payment systems
• Ability to write and review code as necessary and quickly learn or evaluate new technologies
