Engineering Manager, Back End (Bangkok based, relocation provided)

About the Role

In Agoda’s Back End Engineering department we build scalable, fault-tolerant systems and APIs that host core business logic across inventory, pricing, product information, customer data, communications, partner data, booking systems, payments, and more. Systems change frequently with dozens of releases per day, so we use CI/CD, testing, and self-healing design. We use languages such as Scala and Go, data technologies like Kafka and Aerospike, and agile practices.

Responsibilities

• Be hands-on: write and review code, provide technical coaching and guidance to engineers.
• Own system architecture and engineering decisions for complex, scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Operate as system owner with operational responsibility for services in production.
• Work across the full technology stack: infrastructure, client side, back end, performance, data.
• Promote DevOps culture: automation, leanness, CI/CD and reliable release practices.
• Develop people: hire, onboard and inspire engineers, grow high-performing teams.
• Make autonomous decisions, set KPIs, and practice data-driven decision making.

Qualifications

• Extremely proficient in at least one programming language (examples: Java, Scala, C#).
• Strong experience in systems architecture for complex, scalable and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Demonstrable experience as a system owner with operational responsibility in production.
• Proficient in lower-level engineering concepts (garbage collection, context switching, threading).
• Experience with DevOps practices, automation and CI/CD pipelines.
• Good understanding of application security.
• Experience working in successful agile development teams.
• Prior experience running engineering teams (5+ direct reports).
• Ability to operate autonomously, set direction, and drive outcomes with ownership.
• Practices data-driven decision making.
